Akeelah and the bee

Yes. I like this movie. Akeelah is an eleven-year-old girl who manages to spell a lot of difficult words. Akeelah is portrayed as a girl with great determination. She was brought up in a broken family. Her father had passed away. She was risen up by her mother. Because of her talent in spelling difficult words, her headmaster, Mr.Welch encouraged her to take part in the Crenshaw Schoolwide Spelling Bee. She won the competition easily. I like the character of Dr.Joshua Larabee in this movie. I think he looks like Dr.Edwin.hehe…He tested Akeelah with some difficult words and found that she had the potential to participate the National Spelling Bee. At first, Akeelah refused to join this competition. The story goes on with Akeelah at last is participating the National Spelling Bee contest and won it! I like this movie because it shows how a girl who lack of confidence finally win over it and won the contest. The way Dr. Joshua Larabee used flashcards and rope skipping to help Akeelah to memorize the spelling of vocabularies can be considered as one of the method to be used in English classes.

  1. I really agree with you about this movie where this is really a wonderful movie. This movie teach us a lot of valuable things where as i concern from the beginning Akeelah thinking she is the best and no need coaches from others but it seems she learned her lesson later on that she shouldn't be too confident with her ability because there are some more better persons out there who much more better than her and people like Dr. Joshua went through a lot of experiences this competition so better for her to get advice from them who know better about the stuff. This message also should be considered by us where it teach us that we should respect peoples who went through a lot of experiences in life and get knowledge as much as possible from them in a polite way.

  2. Ho ho, I never thought of Larabee as an image of Dr Edwin. Highly imaginative of you to think so!

Flashcards is a definite plus factor for teaching. As we have learned that most students are visual learners, flash cards can be a very good method for them to remember the rules of grammar and other lessons we teach them. Mind maps might be another good way perhaps?
