Position Paper~~The Merry Maid by JAyakaran Mukundan …

I have no idea what topic I want to write for position paper. We are given two books as choices to write our position paper.

After pondering for an hour, I decide to write on Mukundan’s “The Merry Maid”. I love this story so much. The writer portrays the mother’s love through the character, Lakshmi and the Datin. The Datin treats Lakshmi as her own daughter without being prejudice although Lakshmi is not Malay. An Indian girl is adopted and raised up in a Malay family. They live as a family!

Besides, Lakshmi’s love towards her daughter, Sakinah is presented greatly. At the end of this story, Lakshmi decides not to fight her right as the biological mother of Sakinah as she knows Sakinah can live in a better condition at Datin’s place. Although she wants so much her daughter to stay at her side, she thinks to give the best to her daughter!
I like this short story so much~~~

~Second Draft~

I have spent my whole day doing my second draft. It’s really challenging for me! I have cracked my head to think of the implication of the political theme in Ibsen’s “Enemy of the people” in my future class.

Finally, I come out with the idea that the play exposes students to the corruption of the majority power and helps to instill political awareness among students.

I provide some suggestions on how teachers teach the play in order to inculcate awareness among students of their responsibility in politics. Teachers have to stress on the importance of being a wise and smart citizen.

These are my implication and I will submit my second draft to my supervisor tomorrow.

First Draft*****

One word to describe it…Torturing~~~hahaha~~~feel quite stress when doing first draft because of my title… At first, I want to do a critic on the effect of politics on our education system but my supervisor advised me not to do it because it is not a very good idea. She suggested me to do on the implication of the novel in my future teaching.

The reason I choose to do on political theme of novel because I found that students nowadays are lack of the awareness towards politics including Me, myself. Why this happens? Are we a part of our beloved country?

This happens because students are not exposed to politics. Their school lives is study, study and study to get good results. Thus, I think Henrik Ibsen’s “Enemy of the people” is a good choice to inculcate political awareness among our students.

In a nutshell, I discover that project paper helps me to gain knowledge which I was never exposed before…It helps me to think in different perspectives

PrEciOuS

Feel empathy towards her life…She was molested by her own father. Her mother does not show much love towards her. She was bullied by school boys; laughing at her…She is expelled from school when the school had discovered her second pregnancy (by her father). Her father is really disgusting. He acts like animal! He should be punished!!!!

Precious is arranged to attend an alternative school by her high school principle. Precious tries to escape from the traumatic experiences through imagining and fantasy. Deep in her heart, she hopes herself being love and appreciated by people especially her mother.
The teacher in the alternative school, Miss Blue Rain helps her to recognize words and improve her reading skills.

At the end of this movie, Precious decided to take care of her two children with one who is a Syndrome Down in a very young age. She appears to be a strong and determined girl when facing all the hardships that she may face in her future.

Documentary~~~

Wow…Boring…Dull…But Useful~~~ We watched a documentary about few teachers share on how they manage their classes. It really provided me with some ideas on the real situation of teaching in schools. The documentary is in American context and the students are average in their studies and behaviors.

The first person introduced to us is a History teacher. He tries his best to involve the students in the teaching learning process. The teacher does not look confident in his teaching. Students will not show respect to teachers who are lack of self confidence. This reminds me to keep my confidence in my teaching.

The second person showed to us is a Physical Education (PE) teacher. She is a senior of the school. She is very committed to the school and she feels unsatisfied with the administration board. What impress me most is her mentions about the different behaviors of different person and she needs to put herself in their shoes to feel what they feel and to be tolerant. I agree with her statement. It reminds me that I will teach students with different learning styles and different levels of language proficiency.

The third teacher is portrayed as a teacher who loves to be famous. He gets very angry when he lost in the election for teacher of the year. He fails to control his emotion and kicks the table till it falls off. At the end, he realizes his own weaknesses and he decides to control his emotion.

Another person introduced is a lady who holds the position as an assistant principal. She faces much more pressures than other teachers. But she tries her best to cope with the problems faced by teachers when they come to her.

This documentary shows how three teachers and an assistant principle cope with their school lives. The problems they faced in school maybe the problem that I will face in my future teaching. It did provide me with ideas in coping with school lives.

BoRiNG MoViE For Meee…..

‘Finding Forrester’ is a movie that shows a relationship between an intelligent black boy at the age of 16 with a famous writer. I dislike this movie because the storyline is dull and boring. The only part I enjoy is when the boy, Jamal participating in the basketball competition.
This movie does not inspire me much as the writer, William Forrester teaches the boy, Jamal outside the school.

Their relationship begins when Jamal sneaks into Wiliam Forrester’s home. However, he was chase away by William Forrester. Jamal left his bag at Forrester’s home. When he returns to retrieve his bag, he finds that all his essays were commented on. Jamal went to ask Mr. Forrester if he could help to improve his writing skills. William agrees to help Jamal by the condition that Jamal would keep William’s secret identity. Jamal agreed and they both become friends.

Errmmm…. I feel quite touch by their friendship. I found that teachers and students can be friends. Students will feel free to share their feeling if their teachers treat them as friends. For me, I think I will be my students’ friend outside the class in order to build up the relationship with them.

Overall, I discover that the movie contains moral values but the storyline is presented in a lengthy and dull way…

LeaN On ME

This is the fourth movie that we watch in our tutorial class. I love this movie most among all!!! It is so touching!! The school in the movie is facing the possibility of being taken over by the state as it has less-than-average basic skills test scores. Morgan Freeman acted as an arrogant and unorthodox principle who returns to the school after he left the school for twenty years. I love his character, Joe Clark so much. He is a devoted principal in managing the school administration board and the discipline of students! He is a real leader!!! He is so brave to fire all the students who sell drugs and have gangs. I feel glad that he is wise enough in handling the discipline problem in school while all the teachers are scared of the students. One teacher is beaten until bleeding when he tried to stop fighting between students.

Joe Clark is portrayed as a strict and tough principle. He strictly requests the teachers and students to obey his commands. He even punishes the teachers if they do not follow his orders. I think this is a good principle because if the teachers themselves cannot obey the rules and regulations, how are them going to request the students to listen to them? However, he shows true concerns to his students when they have problems. He counsels them patiently and helps them solve the problem.

For me, it is important for a teacher to be a role model for his students in order to educate them. This helps teachers to gain respect from students. Besides being the role model for students, teacher must show concern to their students always. Teacher must always be sensitive towards their students. They must try their best to find out the problem and help their students to solve the problem they face.

Eventually, Clark is successful but his unorthodox method leads to a clash with city official that threaten to undo all his efforts. He is arrested and the entire student body gathers at the Central Office of the Paterson Board of Education. The students want the authority to release Mr. Clark. Finally, Clark is released and the good news is the school achieves more-than-average basic skills tests scores.

position paper

This is the first class we haved after two weeks of holidays. I am tempted by the smell of KFC's snack when Miss Amelia and Miss Elisha carried two boxes of food into our class today. however, we have to control ourself to pay attention to Mr.Vahid's presentation on ways to write good argumentative essay. From his sharing, i learned to present my points in the position paper in a more effective way.

Mr Vahid have taught us ways to recognize the elements in a good argumentative essay like the claim, data and warrant. i found it interesting as i seldom write in this way. My previous writing of argumentative essay is based on thesis statement and supporting details and sometimes i do not know what to write for the supporting details. This causes my points in the essay sounds not persuasive and firm enough.

At the end of class, everyone of us are given a box of KFC snack box!!!!Thanks Dr. Jaya a lot for loving us so much!:DDDhaha...i finish the whole box in the class!!!!haha

Akeelah and the bee

Yes. I like this movie. Akeelah is an eleven-year-old girl who manages to spell a lot of difficult words. Akeelah is portrayed as a girl with great determination. She was brought up in a broken family. Her father had passed away. She was risen up by her mother. Because of her talent in spelling difficult words, her headmaster, Mr.Welch encouraged her to take part in the Crenshaw Schoolwide Spelling Bee. She won the competition easily. I like the character of Dr.Joshua Larabee in this movie. I think he looks like Dr.Edwin.hehe…He tested Akeelah with some difficult words and found that she had the potential to participate the National Spelling Bee. At first, Akeelah refused to join this competition. The story goes on with Akeelah at last is participating the National Spelling Bee contest and won it! I like this movie because it shows how a girl who lack of confidence finally win over it and won the contest. The way Dr. Joshua Larabee used flashcards and rope skipping to help Akeelah to memorize the spelling of vocabularies can be considered as one of the method to be used in English classes.

The Ron Clark’s story

This is the second movie that we had watched for Dr.Jaya’s class last week. The storyline of the movie is based on a true story of an energetic and creative teacher who leaves his hometown to teach in a New York City Public school. The lead actor for this movie is Matthew Perry.
I am impressed by the patience of the teacher towards his rebellious students. He set up rules for his class. One of the rules that impressed me most is “we are one family”. He wanted to create a friendly and loving learning environment for the students. From the rule, I know that the teacher is trying to build trust of the students toward him. Although it seems impossible to make the whole class to obey the rules at first, however the patience and the passions showed by Mr. Clark had changed the students’ character amazingly. It really shows me how important for a teacher to be patient.
This movie helps me a lot in my future teaching. I like the idea used by the teacher which he asked all the students come in front one by one to light up the candles on a big cake. This shows that they are united, they are in one family.

Practical Practical Practical

Our practical will start next year in six months time from now. Lecturers are giving us advice in dealing with partners, students, colleagues and housemates. I feel nervous when I think of the difficulties that I might face in my practicum. However, I felt excited when I think of the students. Feel eager to educate them not only knowledge from books but life lessons as well..^^
Dr. Jaya asked us to list down eight names so that we can stick together in a house. Oon will be my partner while Priscilla and Sharon will be our housemate. We have find another four, I think..heeee:D. We decided to go to Gajah Perang. Firstly, it’s because Gajah Perang is a town area so the facilities there are better. Secondly, it’s easier for me to get delicious food especially the Nyonya’s food..hehe…
Anyway, I have to prepare myself to overcome all the challenges that I might face during practical. Gambatea to all my coursemates!

Mona Lisa’s smile

This is the first movie that we watched for this semester. I had watched this movie before with subtitles. The movie carries for two hours which is very long for me. The lead actress is Julia Robert who act as Katherine Watson, an art teacher.
Yes. I like the movie because it motivates me to be a better teacher. The movie is quite entertaining. I would rate it as “so so”. Yes. There are moral values in the movie. The devotion of the teacher touches me. She did not give up although she was humiliated in the first day of her lesson. She continued to find a better way to teach the students. Besides that, her effort in instilling the students to look art from their own perspectives had inspired me. I feel that students today like to expect teachers or books to spoon feed them with knowledge. They never try to acquire knowledge with their own effort and therefore, most of the thoughts or knowledge that they get are belongs to the experts or professional people in the society.
Apart from that, the teacher’s spirit of fighting with the mindset of traditional society which stereotype women as housewives touches me too. She encourages her students to strive hard in order to achieve their dreams. I think the determination and devotion of the teacher in this movie inspires me to become a better teacher in my future teaching.

Exhibition at University’s Hall

We were brought to our university’s hall today. It was the “Pameran Reka Cipta dan Inovasi” which was launched for three days (20-22th July). As we tramped hither and thither, the current went off suddenly and we continued wandering in the darkness for about 5 minutes. Hahak...
Dr.Jaya and his team had created software for teachers to create questions for their students. I like the software as it helped me to lighten my work as a teacher in the future. Hehe…I can create as many questions as I like for my students to practice their language…
Besides that, there are lots more creative inventions were exhibited in the hall. For instant, the tools used to open coconuts, the cow’s skin which can cure wounds and lots more. The exhibition really helps to increase my knowledge. I think this type of exhibition should be carried out more often in our university to increase knowledge and experience of our students.

DROWGAMES!!!

Our first tutorial was carried out at the resource center of our faculty which is the Faculty of Education. Our tutors for this course, Miss Alicia and Miss Amelia instructed us to go to the website (http://drowgames.com/) to play a game called Drowgames.
I still remembered that my first opponent is my coursemate, Cheah Mun Chung so as I am his first opponent. We are quite blurred when we first played the game. The answers are quite confusing. Anyway, I won the game! Yippie!!! Haha…Yes. I like drowgames!
I like it firstly because of the prizes!!!hahaha! Of course not only the prizes had attracted me or else Dr. Jaya and his friends will feel sad. Hahak..Apart from the grand prizes that make me love Drowgames, the challenging questions of the game attracted me too. When I first begin to play the game, it really make me ponder for a while to choose the correct answer.
Yes. I will recommend this game to my Form 1, Fom 2, and Form 4 students. I wouldn’t recommend it to Form 3 and Form 5 students because they will be having their PMR and SPM. I think Drowgames help students to build up their vocabularies and grammar usage.

For example, The questions posted are suitable for all level of students...Some questions are easy and some are quite tricky~~hehe~~I hope i can introduce this game to my future students^^I believe this game will make English lessons more interesting!!
